The Buzz on Medical Marijuana
In recent years, twenty-four states and the District of Columbia have legalized medicinal marijuana. If you are someone who is using medical marijuana to manage pain, control a seizure disorder or keep nausea in check, and you are also out in the working world, you should be sure to ask your HR rep some important questions.
If your employer has a mandatory drug policy, for instance, make sure you know the ramifications of having marijuana in your system while on the job and whether it makes a difference if you hold what’s called a “marijuana card.”
Also know where you stand in terms of worker’s compensation. What we can tell you is that you will be covered if you get hurt on the job and are found to have THC—the active ingredient in marijuana—in your system. Worker’s compensation will still cover you unless your injuries were willful and self-inflicted.
We encourage you to have a more in-depth conversation about your worker’s comp policy with a supervisor or someone in HR so you know what to expect. We want to make sure you’re covered and protected in this ever-changing world.
